Telecom Paris is hiring a research engineer/PostDoc in the framework of the project PEPR-NF JEN (Just Enough Networks). The telecommunications networks have a significant share in global energy consumption and therefore in greenhouse gas emissions. It is expected that 6G will offer a Green IT technique. It is true for transmit energy thanks to large bandwidth and MIMO approach. But other elements and operations performed in these 6G networks contribute differently both at the time of their use or their manufacturing on the energy consumption. The main goal of this postdoc is to evaluate and then optimize the predominant elements both in terms of consumption and manufacturing. This postdoc is at the heart of the Green IT issue.
Work description
- Develop a generic transmission/reception chain model for a base station (BS), considering as accurately and generally as possible the various modules (e.g., MIMO/hybrid beamforming, encoding/decoding, etc.).
- Create consumption models (usage) for each of the modules (MIMO/BF, bandwidth, carrier frequencies). Understand the dependency on bandwidth, capacity, and throughput.
- Study and optimize the trade-offs.
- If time permits, also consider the energy devoted to the manufacturing of the stations as well as other environmental issues such as materials/metals, resource depletion. Follow a similar approach to earlier work in this direction at the terminal level.
Required Skills
- Signal processing for digital communications
- Operation of 4G/5G networks
- Programming in Matlab or Python
- Knowledge of electronic hardware
- Sensitivity to ecological issues (materials, energy, etc.
