Practically, all contemporary wireless systems are built upon fundamental communication principles of Claude Shannon, who, in his seminal work, has deliberately considered the semantic aspects and the effectiveness of transmitted messages as irrelevant to the communication problem. Establishing this dichotomy between information content and its significance has been instrumental in achieving reliability and efficiency in information transmission over noisy channels.
However, today's wireless networks have started catering to cyber-physical and mission-critical systems, such as swarm robotics, self-driving cars, and smart Internet of Things. Fueled by the emergence of networks of autonomous agents with advanced sensing, learning, and decision-making capabilities, emerging communication systems are expected to efficiently and effectively handle and transport massive volumes of multimodal data, which is acquired, fused, and/or processed in different geographical locations. A fundamental shift in thinking is necessary to design communication systems for scenarios entailing event-driven and interactive communication, status updates transmission, and autonomous decision making. Goal-oriented semantic communication has recently emerged as a promising paradigm shift.
This GDR ISIS meeting will address the open questions and key challenges related to this change of paradigm. They can be related to information theory, digital communication considerations, signal processing, learning, system optimization, etc.
If you wish to present your work during this meeting (20' including questions and discussion), please send us a short summary of what you plan to present (1 page), including the context, the objectives and methodology and the references of the related papers from the presenter. The papers will be selected according to the program coherency and, if possible, a balanced representation of laboratories.
